@8018_301's review of Silent Hill: Townfall

★★★★

I enjoyed how the story slowly reveals its mystery as you explore the island. Exploration is guided through explicit cues, but also through what sometimes feels like pure theory. That sense of slowly figuring things out for yourself made the whole experience incredibly engaging. The game is also stunning visually, which makes the atmosphere and immersion even stronger. The sound design and music kept me on edge. I found myself closing every door behind me, just to feel a naive and short-lived sense of security. The CRTV gameplay mechanic is really cool. I thought it was used perfectly without becoming overcomplicated or overbearing. You’ll mostly use it as an X-ray, and I honestly loved how simple the gameplay around it feels. It gives the exploration, puzzles, and atmosphere plenty of room to breathe without the CRTV ever getting in the way. My only real wish? I wish we had more phone numbers to call scattered around the map. It would’ve been such a fun little touch to discover some extra lore or a few easter eggs here and there. I wouldn’t have minded getting mostly growls and static noise. Seeing so many phone numbers blacked out in the environment and not being able to interact with them was a bit disappointing. I came into this with very little knowledge of how a Silent Hill game actually plays. I’ve been putting off Silent Hill 2 because I’d like to play the original before the remake. Townfall was my first complete Silent Hill playthrough, and I’m not disappointed!
