A solid game of the year contender, cairn combines a celshaded art style, solid acting, a brilliant soundtrack with a nearly unexplored genre in video games. Where most games’ complexity with climbing starts and stops at “jump towards a wall and hold up”, each meter and handhold in cairn must be earned by carefully placing each limb on the wall, one at a time, to hold your weight and buy enough time for your next movement. The game can be unforgiving and is made more challenging by a system of meters (health, temp, thirst and hunger) that must be managed with the limited space your pack has for gear and supplies. The story ultimately ends with a surprising outcome(s), but one that is appropriate for the main characters arc. With free DLC dropping in August, this game continues to get better and is not one to be missed.
