A phenomenal achievement. A successor the best metroidvania of all time that improves in every single way. Combat is refined, with multiple options for approaching enemies in both your “style” as well as different sub weapons and buffs/equipment. The hand drawn graphics are beautiful, the music is affecting and haunting, and the writing is profound in places and humorous in others. Even the voice acting (the characters will babble in a made up language as their dialogue is spelled out) adds to their charm. The difficulty is unforgiving and respawning several minutes away from the boss is not uncommon, sadly. The game can also be almost secretive to a fault: entire bosses, items or even entire areas and quest lines can be missed even with thorough inspection of the world. The final section of the game sees permanent changes to the world that can close off many events/quests to the player but those who would care enough to see the game through to its true end likely wouldn’t be tripped up by this. An incredible game and one any fan of the genre would be remiss to not experience.
