A spiritual sort of sequel to Returnal (probably the best PS5 exclusive to this day), Saros improves the gameplay with tighter controls, an added shield/reflectkng mechanic and more biome variety. The skill tree makes every run worthwhile as you improve your stats and raise your odds of success but the ability to select your own starting point somehow weakens the experience compared to Returnal. The story is the weakest part of the entire package; while Returnal mastered the art of giving piecemeal, consequential story flashes through logs, flashbacks and cutscenes, Saros seems to have taken the lesson that vaguely posturing at some underlying mystery that you’ll eventually solve is enough to keep the player going. Enough information is never given to explain what is going on in either the planet Saros or Arjun’s internal mind state, just random logs of prior crew members losing their minds as they perceive the cosmic horrors around them. The “twist” never really satisfies and the true ending doesn’t answer or even entertain. Rahul Kohli’s performance is a standout and the audio design and music are phenomenal.
