Despelote is a haunted game. Not by a malevolent spirit, or anything from a horror movie, but by childhood memories, of what ifs, regrets, and hopes. Despelote has a soul, that is rare to find anywhere else. It helps, that the background sounds in the park is simply taken from the real life location, capturing the voices and sounds of real people, just going about their lives, unknowingly being immortalized within this game. It helps that throughout the game, you are led by the voice of the boy you are playing as, describing the feeling of being there, even if those memories have been twisted by time and fondness. But that isn't why Despelote is so full of life, it's in the writing and dialogue, that feels as if it is taken directly from a childhood memory. It's in the choices you make, perfectly capturing the feeling of being a carefree child, in awe of the world and the joy found within. It's in the sadness, of having grown up. Despelote crafts one of the most beautifully human games, out of amateurish 2D drawings, and blocky/blobby 3D renders. And it couldn't be more perfect.
