@deehar's review of Big Walk

★★★★½

“inaudible with thumbs up emote” Big Walk completely surprised me. It feels different from most modern co-op games, which people often dismiss as 'friend slop.' Over the last few weeks, I’ve been playing it with my office colleagues, and I have to say, it’s a fantastic bonding experience. It has this amazing atmosphere where you just wander around an island, solving puzzles and finding so many things to interact with. You genuinely feel a sense of closeness with your friends when playing this game which makes you feel like you're in the same room together. The game uses this realistic /proximity voice mechanic where if you wander too far away from your friends, their voices actually fade out. You get to walk through a huge and mysterious island that is scattered with puzzles that need to be completed. Each puzzle will have its difficulty curve, some might be hard, some might be too easy and some might annoy you and your friends, to death. It all comes down on how you and your friends communicate in solving the puzzles. Based on my 20 hours with the game, there are a few downsides that might drag down your overall experience. First of all, it’s called Big Walk for a reason—the map is absolutely enormous. You’d expect to be able to run, but you can’t; the best you get is a slightly faster walk. Secondly, falling from high places triggers a frustrating stun animation where you just have to wait to get back up, which feels completely pointless. Finally, I really think the experience would be way less dreadful if they added a proper map in the menus, rather than forcing you to rely solely on the physical map item your character holds in-game. The game also features endgame content that promises a rewarding finish to your journey. My friends and I haven't reached that point yet, but we are looking forward to discovering the reward for ourselves. This post-game section seems to be significantly harder, adding an excellent layer of difficulty for teams seeking a true challenge. Overall, Big Walk is an unforgettable experience that will give you and your friends plenty of memorable moments. House House has masterfully crafted a game that genuinely feels like a real-life outdoor adventure or a team-building retreat. It steps far away from the typical "friendslop" games we often play just to have background noise in a voice call. Instead, it serves as a beautiful reminder that video games aren't solely meant for mindless entertainment—they are a powerful medium designed to build connections, test your cooperation, and ultimately bring people closer together.
