@deehar's review of Return of the Obra Dinn
★★★½
Return Of The Obra Dinn is an exceptionally well written game, but with a catch that requires you to go through an investigation that requires your wittiness and masterful deduction, and it is not a simple one. Without revealing too much context of the game, you play as an investigator who need to investigate on what happened to ALL crew members of the Obra Dinn. You will be given a book and a mystical pocket-watch to solve all of those cases, and that's about it. While I've enjoying writing this and would love for people to try it, I'd say it's not for everyone. There are some mechanics in the game that I find truly tedious for people to experience, and it can also be very frustrating. I also encourage you to bring along a notebook and a notepad which can significantly help you on crosscheck various things in the game.Several things really worth mentioning in the game. Visually, the game adopts a striking 1-bit monochrome art style that mimics old-school computer graphics, instantly selling that eerie, 19th-century maritime isolation. To make the experience even better, the game lets you customize the visual theme based on your preferences—whether you want a classic amber monitor glow, a Macintosh green, or a stark black-and-white look to match your mood. The OST slapped, too, driving home that haunting atmosphere every step of the way. That said, it has to be one of the most unique things I've ever experienced in a video games, and it might be for you too.
