@drkameha's review of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
★★★★
I'm.not going to mention how Dark souls 2 is the weird one kf the family. We all know this. I'm going to talk about how it is as a fair playthrough. Ratings are done on an overall enjoyment factor, with 10 being bloodborne old hunters dlc and 1 being blight town. Part 1 - 4 lord souls This part is aight. Some of the areas are cool but some don't really make sense. Like iron peak is qually design but I can't tell you why it's connected to earthen peak. Or how down a narrow corridor and through the sewers we get to heides tower of flame from majula. Its also kind kf difficult to play a "build" at this point in the game becauae all of the early levels on a character are almost meaningless. Overall vibe 6/10. Part 2 - King's ring - Nashandra Bro. What the fuck even is this bit. Its way more fun, but also I feel.like the story gets wishy washy. I get were introduced to nashandra and vendrick here (including the formers betrayal of the latter) which is pretty cool but like, who the fuck is aldia, and why does his castle attach to a bird cage which attaches to a lift into the sky? It's really immersion breaking. Dragons aerie is a class area though and is really exciting to play through, especially on sotfs. Final boss is rank though. Nashandra worst Final boss in the franchise. Overall rating 7/10 Part 3 - DLC 1 Sunken King 🤴 🚢 This has my second favourite fight of the game (singh) and apart from that it's a mid affair. The first area of the level is hoaching with shan design. It's poise riddled enemies inflicting poison. WHY DOESNT MY DRAGON TOOTH STAGGER YOU?! The second area is really cool conceptually. The idea of it being a pyramid you have to work your way down but it's filled with traps is great but felt a little.lacking once I actually hit the bottom. Also the squalid queen could be a fun fight but due to the fact she summons velstadt sometimes it's just unforgivable. Overall feelings 7/10 Part 3 - DLC 2 Iron King 🤴 🌋 Probably my favourite part of the game. Exploration is really fun and you're provided with all the tools you need to do it properly. Really cool range of enemies too. Fume knight was my white whale going into the whole game so to beat it fair and square felt crazy. Fume ultragreat sword was absolutely class to do the remainder of the game with. Don't have much to say other than it was really fun with really unique level design. Overall an 8/10. It would be a 9/10 if the other two bosses were better. Nobody likes smelter demon, we don't need a blue one. Not to mention the run to.both bosses is so shan. Part 4 - DLC 3 Ivory King 🤴 🧊 Boy let me tell you. This dlc is saved by its story because the enemies in this section are chronic. Lots of.back tracking and confusing level layout made me hate this by the end. For story alone, I'd give this 10/10. The final boss is my favourite fight in the game and its implications towards the lore are great. Outside great story, get it in the bin. The optional bosses are just two of a previous boss (with the worst boss run in any of the games) and Aava is just boring. Really disappointed after playing iron King. Overall rating 7/10 (would be 4/10 without the story) Part 6 - Vendrick/Finale Why the fuck do we have to wait so long to find out the manus connection. Its so cool! Vendrick is a mid boss fight you have to jumps through hoops to even damage but the feeling of beating him is intensely satisfying. Also. Making me revisit shrine of Amana in order to get his soul is a criminal offense. Overall feeling (8/10) Conclusion I liked it a lot more than I expected and below are my pros and cons of my experience Pros Really like the light and dark mechanics of the game (torches, pharos lockstones) Some of the armours and weapons are really sweet. Plenty of materials for upgrading too. Lore implications for the dark souls story are huge. Seeing a cycle that isn't the first or last feels important. Lots of enemy variety makes the game really fun Cons Some of the boss runs are chronicles of riddick. Early levelling feels pointless. Why do I need to level adaptability to 24 just to have the iframes from dark souls 1? Some of the movement and hit boxes are a little jank. The durability mechanic is honking and doesn't make the game more difficult, it just makes it annoying.
