I've never really gotten into skating in real life, the furthest I ever got was managing an ollie on a flat surface. I think a big factor in that being the extent to which I would skate is that to get any further you have to be willing to fail at a trick; and fail hard a lot. Although that's how far I personally got on my road to becoming the next Tony Hawk, there's something that always fascinates me with the tricks that people on social media come up with and the vision they have, to try over and over again until they finally get "the one". Seeing the world today with its incredibly aggressive architecture begs you to consider what could be so wrong about people expressing themselves by hopping from one sidewall to another and adding a little flair in the middle. This game felt like a love letter to the people who lost their favourite spot on the corner because some bigwig lobbied the council into adding those little metal fuckers to the edges of walls that are exclusively there to prevent skateboards grinding along them. In a world of ever growing, overbearing surveillance you have to make a deal with the devil just to feel alive; forging friendships in the strangest of places along the way thanks to the third spaces you must make without the help, if not active antagonism of the ones who govern your way of life. Beautiful soundtrack the whole way through partnered with a brilliant feeling of hitting those stomps at the perfect time, every time. Being recommended games like these is the best sign you can get that you need to listen to those recommendations more often!
