@johnvideogame's review of Detroit: Become Human
★★★½
There are some things I like about it and some things I dislike so buckle up because I have a lot to say about it Graphics: Firstly the 3D art and design is IMPECCABLE, the whole time I imagined the countless hours it took to render the scenes from modelling them, to animations, and lighting. You just know the motion capture actors went through hell recording these scenes too. Quite a beautiful game throughout. my only complaint is the fact we have to see the disgusting characters like Todd in full detail 5/5 Story: The good news: I might be biased from my love of Forensic Files but I love connors storyline, its honestly the highlight of the whole game. The other two have a good set up, and some fun moments here and there, but their stories are vastly overshadowed by the fantastic writing of Connors segment. It has a great blend of Sci-Fi and thriller. It's funny at times and doesn't take itself too seriously which is why the minor plotholes in the storyline can be forgivable. Like why was Hank not afraid of Connor stealing his job? Why did no one figure out that all the deviants had robot PTSD sonner? If the robots suffer from robot PTSD should they make robot psychologists for them? whatever who cares its a fun time. If connors story line was more fleshes out and the other two were cut entirely i would give it five stars and it would be my favorite game of all time. Bad News is that Kara and Marcus' segments are a SLOG especially on multiple playthroughs. While I enjoy the spectacle of the dumpyard scene it could have just as easily been a skippable cutscene when youre not making any choices. Also Kara and Marcus storys don't make a whole lot of sense in general with the funny moments being few and far between. Which can be okay if it really had something interesting to say. In my opinion theres nothing actually interesting about Marcus' or Kara's character after the opening scene in terms of what they do that makes them unique. Yeah sure marcus has the precontruct time thing but I cant think of a single thing that guy talks about other than "let the robots be free, end andriod slavery" they should have gone further into the side of him they hinted at the beginning. like maybe he paints murals about ending robot slavery or something. also the other deviant robots ARENT INTERESTING OR NUANCED AT ALL. (unfortunately as most of the side charcters are) I think the abomination anroids in that creepy guys house were cool designs so they could have gone alot further with what the deviants could look like, because the androids have free will after all. they could change their hair, eye color, even go full terminator if they wanted to. theres a lot of options. like idk im not a writer but someone made some rushed decisions when writing the script and some of the characters. its alright i guess. 3/5 Soundtrack: It has three good moments, other than that its aight. 3/5 Gameplay: Oh boy, this ones a alot to unpack. Its basically an interactive movie, so i know i cant hate on it for just being the way it is. But OMG I hated the gameplay, Sometimes had no idea if I was supposed to hold or smash the buttons because it wouldnt say, that might be a skill issue tho idk. The camera angles got a bit frustrating after a while when I'm trying to look at something and its just out of reach. I often had no idea where I was supposed to go or what I was doing and had to stop time and scan everytime I got a new objective because i was just wondering around like an jackass. The best parts though are analyzing the clues, reconstructing the events, making crucial decisions, and finding little secrets hidden on the maps when there are ones to find. I love how much choice is in this game and I think thats where it really shines which is why the really linear parts with no secrets suck. I'm indecisive on how I feel about the diologue choices. Sometimes the options it gives you are EXTREMELY vague and they ends up saying something you really didnt want them to say. Theres also many diologue options that have no consequence whatsoever, not even on what the other character says back to you. 3/5 my conclusion: I played 20 hours of this game so i obviously enjoyed it. I just wish it lived up to its potential. If the whole game was from connors perspective and was a crime mystery like LA Noire but with robots this game would actually be my favorite thing of all time. It tries to do too much and definitely needed more time to cook but it has charm, it has drama, and it is an amazing technological feat.
