@matt's review of Pokémon Pokopia
★★★★½
In some ways this game being as good as it is gives me hope for the next pokemon generation, but at the same time it makes me sad for all the mediocre entries in the series that we’ve gotten over the last decade. Pokopia doesn’t reinvent the wheel in any way by applying a tried and true formula to a giant media franchise, but it does it well with a level of polish I wasn’t sure pokemon was still capable of. The story isn’t incredible but it is interesting in a way I didn’t expect. The gameplay is fun and I never have to wonder what to do next or feel like I am doing chores. I love that the pokemon have a personality and they really do look great - I mean being one of the best looking 3D pokemon games is unfortunately not a high bar to clear but this game really nails the style it’s aiming for. Honestly, when I saw the trailer for this game I was sure I would skip it. Even more so when I saw the price tag. But I’m glad I let myself be convinced because this is the most fun I’ve had in a pokemon game since legends arceus.
