@reachcave's review of Maseylia: Echoes of the Past

★★½

(Review is for the demo) Hm. Well it's quite rough, like really rough, like, the-world-map-is-just-a-low-resolution-PNG rough, and I think the cell shading hides even more roughness; but, there is definitely something there. The mechanics are bare-bones and the enemies samey, but the soundtrack and design are compelling. I didn't fully experience the Metroidvania aspects of it beyond the first handful of upgrades, but the gameplay itself felt fast and managing abilities felt smooth (although, the lock-on system brings back visions of the N64, not all positive). Glimpses of a sense of exploration, a phrase that is tossed around asbent-mindedly for seemingly all open-world-adjacent games, are truly there, if stifled by overly direct level design. That is to say, there is a vision underneath it all, just one that can only benefit from refinement and time. As a first entry from a solo developer and, as they note on the startup screen, the help of their two brothers, it's promising.
