@smawlek's review of The Blood of Dawnwalker
★★★★½
The Blood of Dawnwalker is from former (senior) CD Projekt Red developers and it shows. You could call it vampire witcher and that's not a bad thing. I was very excited for this game as I love Witcher franchise (except Netflix TV show) and wanted what they will do with similliar settings and vibes. And you really get what you expect, slavish vibes with dark fantasy elements. This games doesn't evolve on the formula much just adds few elements that are intertvined throught the whole game design. The time mechanic is really good mechanic to get you stressed if every action is worth it and I really don't recommend installing mod that prolongs the days that poped up day one. Story and setting is great. It has great lore and dialogues. Some interesting monsters / creatures. One thing that disappointed me was that I didn't really notice that I wasn't drinking blood from humans. It was mentioned once and then at the end during epilogue summary sequence. The ending would be good to, if there wouldn't be so much sequel baiting. Because of that I felt like I didn't get the whole chapter of Coens life. Combat is very reminiscent of Kingdome Come combat, but easier. What it is missing is really, are enemy variations. There really few of them and most of them have very familiar attack patterns. Anyway, the RPG elements are very same as in the Witcher 3, for better or worse. Simplified: Pros: + Story and world building + Limited time mechanic + Combat + Voice acting + Side missions Cons: - Enemy variety - Animations - Some pre-rendered cutscenes and lock on 30 fps on them This is very very good game, especially for Witcher fans. It has its problems, but the bones are there. This feels very much like Kingdome Come situation, where the first one had lots of small problems and jank, but the second one polished everything and made it excellent. 9 / 10
