@tweakyodin73's review of Marvel's Wolverine

★★★★

*Spoiler free* Wolverine is a very good game - for me an 8/10. Prior to and during my play through I did not look at any reviews of the game, I had just heard that IGN gave it a 6/10. Now that I have beaten the game and plan to 100% it, below are my thoughts. Graphics I am not typically someone that cares much about graphics, but I thought the graphics were pretty fantastic. In a Wolverine game you expect there to be gore and blood to the max and Insomniac nailed that. I loved that as Wolverine lost health, his body would deteriorate and you could see his adamantium skeleton underneath. Great attention to detail. Combat I quite enjoyed the combat. I have seen that many people have found the combat repetitive since it is relatively simple and a hack and slash. When I say this I know it is probably coming from a place of bias because Wolverine is my favorite Marvel character, but I did not have that experience and thought the combat was as good as they could have made it. Wolverine is a pretty one dimensional character combat wise. He has claws and that’s about it. The skill tree was good enough to keep the combat flowing and interesting for me. Story The story is where most of my critiques come from in this game and this is coming from someone that loved the story. It may be better than Marvel’s Spiderman 2’s story in my opinion (that’s something I’m still chewing on so please forgive me if you disagree). The first third of the story is really solid. I enjoyed getting to learn the new dynamics between team x and thought it was fun doing those couple of missions. After a pretty significant story beat, the second third of the story begins and this is probably the worst part of the game. There are long stretches where you’re on a wild goose chase and you’re simply enjoying the combat while getting through the story. I think a boss fight or two during this section would have been nice to break things up, but alas that did not happen. The final third is where insomniac really shows their game developing chops. You get two very fun and interesting boss fights. While the final boss fight brings everything you have learned combat-wise together. So three all together to round things off. The final act where Logan learns things about his past was very touching and honestly a bit emotional. I was not expecting to have that kind of reaction given the story up to that point. The story leaves you off on a post credit scene cliff hanger so I sincerely hope they make a second. Final thoughts All in all, a very good and solid superhero action game. I am thankful we have a Wolverine game that is as enjoyable as it is. I personally believe that as time passes this game will receive more love than what it is now even though there are clear flaws. My feeling is that since there’s been so much negative press with Sony that the first PlayStation exclusive game that came out after their announcement of stopping physical production of games was always going to receive harsher criticism.
