@zimtiki's review of Assassin's Creed

★★★★

Oh boy, the start of the franchise that just won’t die. Originally meant to be a sequel to Prince of Persia, this game was always meant to be a parkour/sword fighting game, but the devs realized they’d created something entirely new, and decided to go for a more realistic, mature story direction. The game follows a man in the modern era named Desmond Miles. After being kidnapped by the mysterious Abstergo Industries, he’s put in a machine by Dr, Vidic and his lab assistant Lucy Stillman. This machine, referred to as The Animus, allows its user to see and interact with the memories of their ancestors. Desmond sees himself reliving the life of an Assassin named Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad during the crusades in the holy land, nearly a thousand years ago. Through his journey, Desmond learns that parts of history have been manipulated by “pieces of Eden,” ancient technology that transcends human understanding. So yeah, pretty dope story, with a really cool ending and a big “fuck you” cliffhanger. The gameplay is really fun: the sword fighting consists of attacks, parries, grabs, and dodging and the variety of moves makes it always feel pretty fresh. At one point I got into a fight with someone on a tight rope while I was attempting to escape and it was such a cool, cinematic moment that was just there in the gameplay, and I love that shit. The movement is kind of insane though, as you hold the trigger to sprint and climb buildings. You press A to jump to other areas as well, and sometimes, Altaïr just does whatever the fuck he wants. I jumped straight into the water like 10 times during one mission and you INSTANTLY die if you fall in water for some reason, so that pissed me off, and so did the times Altaïr steered clear of where I told him to jump and instead leaped straight to his death, sometimes missing the ledge by CENTIMETERS. But it only happened a couple times, so it was more of a laugh than a genuine frustration. Despite people saying this game hasn’t aged well, it still slaps in my opinion. Assassinate me, Captain!
