@zimtiki's review of Assassin's Creed II

★★★½

Assassin’s Creed II picks up IMMEDIATELY after the first game. Learning that Vidic intends to kill Desmond and enslave humanity with the Apple of Eden, Lucy helps Desmond escape the Abstergo building with the help of her techy assassin buddies Rebecca and Shaun. Looking for more answers about “those who came before” and the pieces of Eden, they put Desmond into a more powerful animus and have him live out the memories of another ancestor, Ezio Auditore in Italy during the years of 1476-1499. You see Ezio go from a careless, sex-addicted young man, to a hardened assassin searching hopelessly for revenge over the death of his father and brothers. The story is really fun, and it’s also really sad. Seeing a man go from happy go lucky to a man so cynical he trusts no one is not a happy journey, but it’s realistic and it’s human. The acting is also fantastic, and a big standout is Leonardo da Vinci, who helps Ezio translate blueprints and creates new tech to help him on his journey. The gameplay? It’s pretty good again, but in my opinion, the combat just is not as good as the first game. When you hit people in this game, they flinch almost every time, whereas in the first game they’d block, get pushed back, try to push forward, etc. It makes some of the enemies seem pathetic, especially when the guy is fucking huge and he can’t stop flinching in a corner while you wail on him. Free sprinting is also a little worse. Before, Altaïr would fuck up every now and then, but now Ezio fucks up ALL THE TIME. You can’t die in the water now at least, but you’ll be in it A LOT because Ezio LOVES to jump into the water while you’re parkouring. I swear to god if you can see water on the screen, avoid it at all costs because Ezio will jump the fuck in regardless of your input. So while this game was easier and less exciting than the first game, the story has certainly been expanded and the characters feel even more real. Yada Yada spada spada.
