@zimtiki's review of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
★★★½
Donkey Kong Country Returns is the first traditional Donkey Kong platformer since the Super Nintendo, and despite a few flaws, it comes off as a love letter to the original DKC Trilogy. Unlike the originals, DKC Returns is incredibly fast-paced. The game is APE-SHIT crazy man. Levels will change in the blink of an eye, there are massive explosions, earthquakes, wild-life stampedes, etc. Every level is like a rollercoaster. One thing that does carry over from the originals is the difficulty. If you play this game in regular difficulty, you’re going to have a bad time. You play as Dinkey Kong and Diddy Kong, with Diddy Kong being able to take a hit for you. Two hits and you’re DEAD. Fall off one of the THOUSANDS of cliffs? DEAD! This game pissed me off so much I nearly broke my 3DS. Just like the original DKC almost made me break my SNES! Though it’s frustratingly hard, the game telegraphs everything to you, so in the end, it’s MY fault for dying so much. The game is gorgeous, has tight controls, and was clearly a labor of love. My biggest gripe, though, is that some levels are locked behind collectibles, and the collectibles are SADISTICALLY hidden. I didn’t find all of the collectibles on a SINGLE LEVEL. It’s insane. Even if you do unlock the extra levels, there isn’t any pay off besides literally playing the level. Also, the ending, while difficult, it pretty anti-climactic. Even with these flaws, though, this is still a solid platformer that somewhat captures the magic of the original SNES trilogy.
