@zimtiki's review of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

★★★½

12 years after the original game’s release, we finally got a sequel to Luigi’s Mansion for the 3DS. Though it’s simply impossible to recreate the magic of the original game, this sequel does manage to squeeze out a little bit of charm. First things first, I have to mention the games structure. In this game, you must conquer not one, not two, but FIVE mansions in total. While exploring five mansions sounds like a DREAM for this series, the game simply denies you the freedom the original game gave you. You warp to a mansion, complete a task, then warp back to E. Gadd’s lab. And E. Gadd talks A LOT. For real, he calls you after every single thing you do, it can kill the pacing sometimes. Luckily, when E. Gadd isn’t hitting you with expository dialogue, the gameplay is nearly as solid as the original, with new abilities, too! Visually, this game is stunning. Just like the original game did in the GameCube. This game pushes the 3DS to its graphical limits. And the fully orchestrated soundtrack? You’d best be cranking the volume up on this bad boy. Overall, this game is a mixed bag of charm and disappointment. It was clearly made with love, but the devs went a little overboard with the dialogue and missions. I’d hoped the remaster would make the game less linear, but from what I’ve seen, it seems to be the same.
