@zimtiki's review of Mario Golf: Super Rush

★★★½

Mario Golf: Super Rush is the third mainline entry in the Mario Golf series. While all the fundamentals are here, I was expecting a bit more after a 20 year hiatus. The gameplay is solid, perfecting the tried and true golf mechanics the series has been building on. It’s responsive, accurate, fun, and even relaxing. Basically you aim, choose your swing power, choose to either give the ball top or back swing, and watch it fly. You really can’t go wrong here, and it makes for a great drinking game. Let’s talk about the modes. The big draw here is Battle Golf, where players hit their balls, sprint to them as fast as they can, and attempt to trip up other players in the process. This mode IS fun, but unfortunately, it’s all about getting your ball in as fast as you can, points mean nothing here. It gets old pretty fast. Stroke play will ALWAYS be where it’s at. The oddest part of this game is the story mode. Sure, other Mario sports games have had campaigns, and some have been really good! But this one falls pretty flat. For some weird reason, they have you play as a Mii and you basically go through a bunch of practice courses to prove that you have what it takes to be in the big leagues. Oddly, after beating the final boss (which is a snowman..?), they tell you you’re ready to play against Mario and his friends! And then the credits roll and the game is over. WHAT!? You’re telling me the game just says “ok you beat the story tutorial, now just go play regular games of golf.” Ok, whatever man. It feels pretty rushed and bland, even for a sports game campaign. Luckily, regular golf against friends is as fun as ever, though some old mechanics ARE missing. The game has received a ton of DLC too, adding more characters and maps to the game as well. While it may be the weakest in the series, Super Rush still has a lot of fun to be had.
