@zimtiki's review of Metroid Prime: Federation Force

★★★★

Nearly a decade after Metroid Prime 3 released, Nintendo surprise dropped Metroid Prime: Federation Force on the 3DS, a squad shooter that has you playing as a Galactic Federation Marine piloting a new GF creation, a massive mech suit. After the destruction of Phaaze, the GF is keeping close watch over the galaxy, trying to find the remnants of the Space Pirates. As a marine, you find out that the Space Pirates are not only still active, but are in the midst of creating a new super weapon. This game was HEAVILY criticized when it first released, mainly for its “chibi” artstyle (small body, big head) and many dismissed it for this reason alone. Well, once again, gamers are idiots because this game slaps. The gameplay feels very similar to Metroid Prime on GameCube, but REALLY goes the next level by introducing gyro aiming, making the shooting in this game feel like an immersive breeze. It also allows you to move your reticle while locked on to an enemy, making leading your target a big part of the gameplay. While I played solo, this game is MEANT to be played with a squad of 2-4 people, something that wasn’t super common in 2016 as it is now. This game was cool BEFORE the squad game invasion. The levels here also vary in their structure, with some being escort missions, other being “kill all enemies,” and even missions where you exit your mech and have to run through obstacles on foot. I gotta say, I had fun with this game from the beginning to the end. Unfortunately, this game is very short and lacks extra content after beating the story mode, though I can imagine this game would be a blast to try harder difficulties with friends. It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than people say it is. I cant wait to see what happens in Prime 4. See you soon, Sylux…
