@zimtiki's review of Sonic Frontiers
★★★★
Sonic Frontiers is the first 3D Sonic game I’ve ever beaten, and I wish more games like it existed because it was kind of a jam. So Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, and Tails get sucked into a digital universe that (plot twist) turns out to be based on Sonic’s memories. Also, there were aliens that got obliterated by a sentient planet? And an AI girl? And Cocos? Idk. I’m sure it’s somewhat established at this point but this story is absolute nonsense. It’s okay though, because this “open-zone” game legs you run super DUPER fast, and that in its own is a blast. The environments are kind of bland, but they essentially contain hundreds of “jungle gym playgrounds” that let you navigate the worlds by doing fun tricks and shit, it’s really satisfying and hits a part of my brain that’s been itching for a while. You can upgrade your speed too, and you’ll also find keys and power ups from mini-levels that are reminiscent of older 3D Sonic games. There’s also a fishing mini-game where you get to chill with Big the Cat and listen to killer lofi hip hop. I spent an embarassing amount of time in here. Every time I played under the influence of the devil’s lettuce, this place became my temporary home. Also, a TON of this games budget went to the fish models, they’re hilariously realistic in this cartoony world. So, aside from some pop-in (which isn’t that noticeable when you’re running super fast the whole time) and some cringey dialogue, this game is actually a good time. Oh, and you’ll never want to fight a giant robot again without screamo blasting.
