@zimtiki's review of Sonic the Hedgehog

★★★½

Sonic the Hedgehog was Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s Mario. The difference was that while Mario was slow, Sonic was FAST and had ATTITUDE. Sonic can run FASTER THAN FAST and is a blur at full speed. An evil BASTARD named Doctor Robotnik, or “Eggman” due to his goofy-ass body type, kidnaps a bunch of animals and turns them into killer machines. As Sonic, you must take these enemies out, rescue the animals, collect coins to open portals to get the 6 Chaos Emeralds, and defeat Eggman and his infernal machines! The gameplay is CLASSIC. You’ll FLY through stages, jump spin and take out enemies, and find secrets that few others have found. This game’s levels are unique, as they can be completed in multiple different ways depending on the routes you use/find. You’ll change between speeding through the levels, to slowing down for precise platforming. The precise moments in this game really slow the game down, and they happen far too often and can KILL the pacing if you get stuck at one. Oh and btw, the first level is Green Hill Zone and it’s AMAZING, but the rest of the levels are kind of mid. There are a lot of slow parts here that punish you for trying to be speedy in any way, and that sucks. Don’t get me wrong though, there’s still fun to be had. While the first level may be the best, there are still fun ways to solve the other levels that aren’t as tedious, they’re just hard to find. You’ll find yourself speeding through levels, jumping on a whim and finding yourself behind a wall you didn’t realize you could go through, it adds a dash of magic to an otherwise flawed game. The final two bosses are nuts too, offering you NO rings meaning you have to go without getting hit ONCE. It’s tough, but honestly, it’s KIND OF fair. Yeah, good game. And it introduced us to one of the most legendary Hero/Villain pairs of all time, so, ya know, it gets points for that.
