@zimtiki's review of Super Mario Land

★★★

Super Mario Land sees Mario leave the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time to go and save the Princess of a new land, Sarasaland, who’s been kidnapped by an alien named Tatanga. I know, it’s weird. The game was created as a launch title for the Game Boy in order to show that it could play NES quality games on the go. The game does a decent job of this as well, and even has its own physics to differentiate its gameplay from the NES Mario titles. The game is fun, tight, and has the perfect difficulty for an on-the-go platformer. It was made very well for what it was. However, when releasing this game and the Game Boy, they chose Tetris as the pack-in game for the Game Boy. Why? Because this game is short. Very short. I beat this game in about 25 minutes on my first try. The game was clearly designed by a small team with the simple task of “creating a functional hand-held Mario game,” and they certainly accomplished their goal, but made the experience a little TOO casual. For what it is, Super Mario Land is a short burst of platforming fun that deserves to be remembered, despite its utter lack of substance. Just… don’t pay too much for it. Also, fun fact! This game marks the first appearance of Sarasaland’s infamous Princess, Daisy!
