@zimtiki's review of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

★★★★

Super Mario Land 2 is the follow up to its original Game Boy counterpart, and while the original felt like it was just trying to imitate Super Mario Bros on NES, this one feels like it’s trying to be more like Super Mario World, and it works WAY better than you’d expect. Shortly after the first Super Mario Land, Mario is returning to his castle (which apparently he has now?) only to find that the one, the only, the WARIO, has taken over his castle. To get your castle back, you must travel to six different lands, defeat their bosses, and take their golden coins. First of all, the platforming in this game feels great. Mario feels exactly how he should, something I can’t say about the first game. The levels are all super unique too, my favorite being the space level where you get to jump around in low gravity. What’s interesting is that the game saves your progress, but a single game over means you lose all your gold coins. So, in the end, you’ll like have to do a Boss Rush before taking on Wario. This can be tough, since some of the bosses are unusually tough, especially Tatanga who returns from outer space once again. Overall, this game is short, sweet, and a neat piece of Mario’s history. It’s a really special little Game Boy game that shouldn’t be missed.
