@zimtiki's review of Twisted Metal
★★★★
Hello, combatants, and welcome to TWISTED METAL, a high-octane vehicle combat challenge where the last person standing gets to meet the mysteriously powerful contests creator, Calypso, and have any wish of theirs granted by him. This PS1 classic has you driving at high speeds through LA, launching rockets and special weapons at eachother while doing sick drifts. It’s a pretty difficult game, but I managed to overcome it with each vehicle. Honestly, this is a game that feels REALLY GOOD to master. Taking out every car on a map without losing a life feels amazing, I made it to the final boss multiple times without getting a game over (you have 2 lives and have to make it through 6 levels with them, it’s tough) and dammmnnnn did that feel good. Each character has a unique ending too, and although it’s just text, the conclusions are pretty satisfying, with a few being genuinely funny. The endings were originally shot in live action but didn’t make it to the disc, luckily, you can check them all out in their VHS tape glory on YouTube! The combatants are incredibly memorable too. In this game, there’s the taxi Yellow Jacket, the massive truck Darkside, the police car Outlaw, the pumped out low-rider with a flamethrower Thumper, the fancy lambo Crimson Fury, the quick little jeep Pit Viper, the tank Warthog, the motorcycle and its driver Mr. Grimm, the ghostly Spectre, the monster truck Hammerhead, the junk heap Road Kill, and the infamous serial killer Needles Kane in his ice cream truck, Sweet Tooth. At the end of the game, you fight the previous champion of Twisted Metal, a demon in a massive tank named Minion, who’s special weapon is fucking bullshit but if you can avoid it, you can take the bastard out. Idk how they did it, but every car in this game has such a unique silhouette that I could pull them out of a crowd of actual vehicle silhouettes, it’s just an iconic piece of video game history. It’s a damn classic, I can’t WAIT to replay the rest of this franchise. Let’s get TWISTED.
